Vege Bang Bang - Founders Anna Brand

For 16 months, Anna has been serving the good people of Auckland fully vegan deliciousness from her quirky little caravan. With a selection of healthy, seasonal plant based mains as well as more indulgent cookie sandwiches from Kookie Haus, Anna’s food truck Vege Bang Bang is sure to delight herbivores, omnivores and carnivores alike. 


Anna describes herself as a ‘humble home cook,’ but the level of flavour and skill found in her offerings feel far from humble and homely to us! Anna has no formal training in the food industry—she worked as a lab technician and property manager prior to starting her business—but has always loved cooking. After taking some time out to travel and have kids, Anna decided not to return to the corporate world and instead focus on something that made her happy and that she could take pride in. Food had always been her passion and being at home with her children gave Anna time to experiment and refine her recipes. It wasn’t as simple as just nailing the food side of things though—getting on the road was a huge challenge. The completion of Vege Bang Bang’s caravan was delayed by four months as the guy doing the fit out was hospitalised and Anna’s husband ended up taking a few months off work to help her get it all finished. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way and after some serious blood, sweat and tears Vege Bang Bang was up and running. 


Fast forward to 2019 and Anna has been serving her fresh and flavoursome vegan dishes to happy customers for almost a year and a half now! Food truck life is pretty challenging at the best of times, with lots of late nights and weekends but Anna somehow manages to balance it all with family life and two young kids. She admits however, that it’s not easy and that people don’t see the time and energy that goes into Vege Bang Bang behind the scenes before events. Despite it being such hard slog, Anna and the team at Vege Bang Bang love the street food scene as it’s a lot of fun and is made up of an amazing community of people. They particularly love catering weddings and get a real buzz from people embracing a fully vegan menu on their special day. This is made even better when they see non-vegan/vegetarian guests pumped about the flavour and quality of the plant-based food on offer. 


Going forward, Anna hopes to cater many more weddings but will also be a regular on the street food circuit. If you see them out and about, be sure to give their cauliflower roti a try. It’s their best seller and for good reason too—it’s amazing! The vege laksa, a new addition to their winter menu, is also proving popular and is sure to warm you up on a chilly winter’s day.
